OCEANS: SAN DIEGO

Welcome to Oceans: San Diego, La Jolla Country Day School’s newest course!  This experiential course explores how the ocean works and dives into the marine species, ecosystems, and conservation challenges relevant to San Diego.  Field based and regionally focused, students will spend 15 days traveling throughout SD County to observe the ocean first hand and meet with the experts who know it best.

  • Snorkeling with leopard sharks at La Jolla Shores
  • Visiting an oyster aquafarm and trying oysters on the half shell
  • Going on an ocean cruise to spot marine mammals
  • Experiencing the famous grunion run and growing your own fish
  • Meeting local scientists, conservationists, and industry experts
  • Collecting data for citizen science projects in Coronado
  • Getting access to a secret beach that no one else you know has ever been.

Students will spend 15 days traveling to 17 different ocean field sites in SD County.  By the end they will have explored nearly 50 of the approximately 70 miles of SD coastline.
